Capsule Review: Save the Date

A short visual novel that appears to be about going on a date, is soon revealed to be about keeping your date alive (hence the title), but then is actually about the collaborative nature of storytelling. Not much will be new to you if you’ve played other games that get meta on this theme, but the game is a well-executed and skillfully-written take with some surprisingly emotionally affecting dialog.

Seeing all the endings will take about an hour, and once you’ve done so you should read this forum thread where the author has the good grace to actually engage in a conversation about the game’s meaning. (If that URL ever breaks, you can see the content in this PDF instead.)

I Stopped Playing When: I saw all the endings. Then I read the forum thread which added some interesting and worthwhile context to the experience.

Docprof's Rating:

Three Stars: Good. I liked the game enough to finish it (or just play it a bunch, for games that don't end). I recommend it to most genre fans.
