Capsule Review: Wordle

A daily spelling puzzle game that started an explosion of innovation.

Each day brings a new target five-letter word to guess. You get six chances and after each guess you receive Mastermind-like feedback telling you which letters are correct and in the right spot, correct but in the wrong spot, or not in the word at all. The game also has a social feature of giving you a set of emoji that depict your performance and which you can easily share on social media.

It’s a very simple game, but its once-a-day gameplay and the ease of sharing and comparing scores made it take off. This resulted in a high-profile acquisition by the New York Times and a lot of other takes on the formula. If you aren’t interested in guessing a word, one of the many games this one has inspired may be more to your liking.

I Stopped Playing When: I still play this daily and compare with Allie.

Docprof's Rating:

Three Stars: Good. I liked the game enough to finish it (or just play it a bunch, for games that don't end). I recommend it to most genre fans.
